System/Collective Intelligence Research

i have been looking at which systems showing collective intelligence to invesitgate more closely. the hope with this investigation is to understand how it will influence an eventual architectural project. the specifics of the architecture remain unknown, but there are some fields or typological ranges that i would like to deploy what i learn. the systems that i would like to get a clearer understanding of are:
  • consciousness, through sensations, perceptions, dreams, lucid dreams, inner speech and imagination
  • metastability in the brain, where individual areas/systems of the brain exhibit tendencies to function autonomously at the same time as they exhibit tendencies for coordinated activity
  • the emergence of symbolic thought, the use of symbols as representations of concepts or objects that define context and meaning
  • string theory, where mass, time, and space become the emergent phenomena
  • multiple systems working in parallel at different scales, quantum mechanics and star/galaxy formation
  • phase transitions of matter, between solid, liquid and gaseous and the effects of metastable systems that move past a particular phase transition without undergoing the phase transition (supercooling, superheating, supersaturation)
  • ferrofluids, composed of nanoscale ferromagnetic particles suspended in a carrier fluid, usually an organic solvent or water

i have some ideas regarding representation and tests for ways to influence these systems, and understand their range and scale of adapatability and response to change, but would appreciate any insight that people would offer on how to do this. it might be interesting to look at fluid dynamic software like real flow to generate some animations. i do not know at the moment if these will all result with a formal taxonomy. i think i need to begin to pin down the rules that govern these dfferent systems and begin to disect how they might be influenced, which is what is nice about a script.

in architecture, it is my desire to create an enviroment that through your interaction with it elevates consciousness. the realm or scale of that perception is not what is important, but what is, is that the environment gives you information that generates an awareness that previously did not exist, at least not in its present condition. it is like reading a book, or re-reading a book. i picked up walden a few days ago and was given a completely new experience reading it with the idea of emergence stuck in my mind. i think that as designers we design the possibility for experience, and it is when that experience is realised, in its infinite and continual mutations, it is successful.

Early Project Thoughts

I would like to think about a cyclical approach of research/design (research and design being a part of the same entity), production, and analysis. I would like to start with a design sequence that will give me a preliminary set of information that I will be able to test, hone, and reconfigure based on what I learn and repeat this process throughout the semester and possibly the year. I like the idea of testing and re-formatting to evolve what I thought I knew into something I had never even imagined.

The first proposal would be to look at start houses at the tops of alpine race courses and think about them in terms of adaptability and production as well as the morphological system(s) that could be applied to allow them to accommodate any site (national, regional, geographical, economical, scale, etc.). I like that nobody has really looked at this as a design problem before. The absurdity and relevance to apply readings like DeLanda's to this topic, to me, becomes very interesting. I also like that there is an imbedded impermanence, a temporality/moveabiltiy, as well as the curious nature of things that attach themselves or find themselves in locations that are outside typical localities.

The second typology I am interested in deals more with the mixing of programs and the mixing of social interaction. A near inverse of the former. A terminal of sorts where people come together, not necessarily to be "there." It is a nodal point before going somewhere else. A kind of metaphoric search engine, or hub, or wrinkle, a necessary bifurcation where the interaction with where you are gets you to where you want to be. I don't know what this "building" is yet or what the programmatic requirements are, but i think that is the importance of its investigation. I am interested in the social/political systems that may or may not shape this design, as well as the formal examples that act as terminals.

Regardless of what typology I choose to investigate there are several aspects that I want to communicate and flesh out, having been long term interests. I am interested in architecture as the production of an event ( a location within 4-dimensional space-time, and where the eventual application of more dimensions will give a more complete understanding). I want to address perception as juxtaposed associations and filtered sensual experiences where we rely on intuitive reactions relative to known systems in order to generate the projections of our conscious and have the ability to expand our consciousness through the freedom of imagination. I am interested in the pure state of thought and perception and how the two combine to create our realities.

Quick Response to Delanda/Emergence/Scripting
How do I use emergence, will I create an emergent system with the tools I have available? Or will I use the knowledge that emergence exists and use that understanding as a tool for how I come to generate and provide a solution for a particular problem? I am excited for the ways to use this, after reading about the system management of the ant colony in the Johnson text and then hearing Delanda speak about the heterogenous approach of specific businesses and how the sharing of tasks and creativity allows for the system(s) to become stronger, more stable, and more efficient because of its variety of institutions and the multiple time/space scales working in parallel.
